The Blender Power Spec Decoder
Five different numbers get called “power” on a blender box, and only two of them mean anything useful. Peak watts and peak horsepower describe a fraction of a second under conditions you never blend in. Rated (continuous) watts and amperage describe what the motor actually sustains. This table defines each one so you can tell which number you are looking at.

Notes on each spec
- Peak watts: Typically two to three times the continuous rating, so it is the largest number a marketer can legally print. Source: Industry convention; motor engineering references.
- Rated (continuous) watts: This is the number that determines whether the blender bogs down on nut butter, frozen fruit, or hot soup. Source: Motor engineering references.
- Peak horsepower: At 745.7 W per HP, peak-HP claims routinely imply more wattage than a household circuit can supply. Source: Industry convention; horsepower-to-watt conversion.
- Amperage: Amps x 120 V gives real watts. A published amp rating can be verified against the circuit, which is why it is the most honest figure a brand can publish. Source: Appliance labelling; Ohm's law.

The arithmetic, shown
One mechanical horsepower is 745.7 watts. A standard US kitchen circuit supplies 120 V × 15 A = 1800 W at absolute maximum, and about 1440 W continuously under the 80% rule for continuous loads. So:
- “2 peak HP” implies about 1491 W — inside the ceiling.
- “3 peak HP” implies about 2237 W — about 437 W beyond the ceiling.
- “3.8 peak HP” implies about 2834 W, roughly 23.6 A — well beyond a 15 A circuit.
None of this makes the claims untrue. It shows what they are: measurements taken with the blade stalled or at the instant of startup, not while the machine is blending.

Methodology & versioning
- Definitions are drawn from motor-engineering convention and standard electrical practice, not from any single manufacturer's marketing.
- Conversions use 1 HP = 745.7 W and P = V × I. All arithmetic is shown on the page so it can be checked.
- The 80% rule is general guidance for continuous loads rather than a blender-specific requirement. Blending cycles are short, so a brief draw above the continuous figure is normal and is not the same as a sustained overload.
- No test standard governs peak watts or peak horsepower for consumer blenders, which is precisely why those figures vary so widely between brands.
- Versioning. v1.0 published July 30, 2026. The version-pinned CSV will not change; corrections ship as a new version with a dated note.
